Reigning national champion coach Dawn Staley seems ready to run her team through the gauntlet now that she's back at South Carolina. According to an anecdote, she said on the latest edition of the Paul Finebaum show about some members of her Gamecocks squad picking team A'jaa Wilson.
The Gamecocks social media team ran a poll while the coach was in Paris for the Olympics, asking the current roster if they would prefer to train with her or A'ja Wilson. Here's what Staley said about the results of the poll:
"Some of them had the audacity to pick team A'ja"
The coach explained that as soon as she arrived in South Carolina, one of her first tasks was going to be to get to work with "Team A'ja". If you're playing for a multiple-time winning national champion, you better choose them over everyone else, even over a former star of your program, like A'ja Wilson.
Dawn Staley on the US Women's Basketball National Team Olympic Victory
Dawn Staley was in Paris to witness the victory of Team USA in the women's basketball Olympic tournament.
The game was almost a repeat of the men's final on Saturday, with the US beating France 67-66 on Sunday. After witnessing the historic moment, Staley said:
“We’re the dynasty of all dynasties. We always talk about gold standards. We always talk about gold habits, and we seem to perform every every four years. We get it done. It is not easy. "
“The world is catching up to us, as you can see. France played their hearts out. They laid it on the line in front of their their home crowd, and that’s what happens. I hope in 2028, it’s not this close.”
The victory was the eighth straight win for the US in women's Olympic basketball. Dawn Staley was a member of the squad for the first three of those victories, in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
It's also important to add that the US has won 10 of 13 editions of the women's basketball Olympic tournament.
