The No. 11 UConn Huskies secured their 10th win of the season on Saturday. They were able to hold off the unranked Bulter Bulldogs, 78-74, to gain more momentum heading into Big East Conference play much to the delight of coach Dan Hurley.
During the post-game presser, Hurley had some choice words when he called out certain podcasts that were giving them a bad light. He said that these shows were poking fun at their disappointing 0-3 record in the Maui Invitational this season.
"I'm not sure how many people at that point in Maui were on their stupid podcast saying we'd be 10-3. It's not all podcasts are stupid, but just some of them are. Some of them say stupid sh*t," Hurley expressed.
The reigning back-to-back national champions had hefty expectations when they were heading into the 2024 Maui Invitational. Instead of coming out on top, they lost all three games to Memphis, Colorado and Dayton to drop their overall season record to 4-3 at the time.
Since then, however, UConn has won six straight including wins against Gonzaga, Texas and Baylor. As far as their last stretch of games is concerned, the Dan Hurley-coached squad has looked like the national title three-peat-seeking team they're supposed to be.
Hurley and the Huskies will next face the DePaul Blue Demons about 10 days from now on the first day of 2025 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
Dan Hurley and the Huskies are looking past the Maui Invitational
In the press conference, Dan Hurley talked about how hard November was for them as he was scrambling to find the root cause of the problem at the time.
"November sucked for us. It was tough. That was a rough long trip but maybe it was Maui. Maybe it was just the circumstances, the fact that the games were just on top of each other so quickly. The fact that it was so jarring to lose the first game there," he said. (0:10)
"It's something that's given this team an edge because the external noise was really loud," Hurley added.
Moving past the Maui Invitational, the whole Huskies team can solely focus on big games coming up in the Big East and preparing for what looks to be stiffer competition come March.
