South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley is not afraid to speak her mind. That was on display once again in a recent social media interaction.
The outspoken coach found herself in the crosshairs of an upset fan on X due to a tweet, which led to back and forth between herself and the incensed fan.
She first tweeted:
"Becky with the good hair I mean good play!" Staley tweeted.
"Becky with the good hair" is a reference to the Beyonce song "Lemonade." It's unclear who Staley was referring to with her tweet.
A fan then quote-tweeted the Gamecocks coach's tweet with a picture of her bio showing where she works and a comment accusing her of race-baiting:
"I feel sorry for the white girls that play under race-baiting Dawn Staley," the fan tweeted.
Staley was quick to clap back at the fan in the comments immediately with a scathing reply:
"Not today satan!" Staley tweeted.
Dawn Staley has dealt with controversy before
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley is no stranger to dealing with controversy due to her comments. This year alone, she has had to put out several fires due to some of her comments.
Most recently before her team won the national championship 87-75 against the Iowa Hawkeyes, the popular coach granted an interview to OutKick where she affirmed the freedom of trans women to participate in women's sports.
"Damn, you got deep on me, didn't you?" Staley said. "I'm on the opinion of, if you're a woman, you should play. If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports or vice versa, you should be able to play. That's my opinion.”
She got a lot of backlash from some quarters due to her stance and nowhere more than from former Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines. Gaines blasted Staley for her comment on trans women being included in women's sports in a Fox Sports interview.
"So what I think this boils down to is, she (Staley) didn't have the courage to stand with women. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her, and she blew it. And truthfully my guess is she is OK with it until her team is defeated by one or more men playing on the opposite team," Gaines said.
Gaines has led the crusade against trans women being included in women's sports ever since her tie for fifth place with trans sportsperson Lia Thomas during the 2022 national championship. She later revealed that Staley blocked her on X.
Throughout her extensive career as both a player and a coach, Dawn Staley has never backed away from voicing her thoughts on controversial issues in society which has occasionally brought her both criticism and acclaim.
