South Carolina coach Dawn Staley shares a unique rapport with her players, both past and present. She has a special relationship with Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson who won a national championship under the stewardship of the legendary coach.

On Thursday, the coach was in a playful mood, uncovering an old video of Wilson during her days in Columbia. It showed her dunking during team warmups, and the charismatic Staley challenged the Aces star to attempt a dunk in the WNBA.

"Aaayeeeee @_ajawilson22 can you still do this?!! I know you can but let me see you turn that thing over on them….might as well you’re doing everything else. But I mean you might avoid getting a 5th place MVP vote this year if you don’t," Staley tweeted.

Last season, A'ja Wilson lost the MVP race to Breanna Stewart after finishing third in MVP voting. Her former coach Dawn Staley is encouraging her to do something spectacular this year.

How Dawn Staley reacted to Ashlyn Watkins dunking

Not many dunks are witnessed in women's college basketball, and South Carolina Gamecocks star Ashlyn Watkins dunking against the Kentucky Wildcats was widely acclaimed. She was the first women's basketball star to dunk at the Colonial Life Arena.

During her postgame news conference, the popular Dawn Staley was nonchalant about the rare event.

"She's normalized it for us. I saw her pick up the ball and I'm like, 'OK, she's going to dunk,'" Staley said. "I'm going to tell her to impress me and do it in the halfcourt.
"Yes, the fans get really excited about it. But we see her do it in practice, we see her do it in the game,” Dawn Staley said. “I think it’s cool in it being normal for us. We dunk in our game. I don't think it's anything new. It's a part of our game.”

It was not Watkins' first dunk in college basketball. She registered a dunk as a freshman against the Clemson Tigers to become the first South Carolina Gamecocks player to do it.

Watkins is the eighth player to have ever dunked in an NCAA Division I game and only the sixth to do so more than once.

After the dunk against the Wildcats, Ashlyn Watkins revealed that it was not a planned event.

“When I’m in the game, I don’t be like, ‘Oh, I’m about to go and try to dunk it,’” Watkins said. “I just do it. I got the steal, and I was like, ‘Why not try it.?’”

Former Tennessee Volunteers star Michelle Snow holds the SEC record for most dunks with three.
