A'ja Wilson and Dawn Staley share special bond

A'ja Wilson and coach Dawn Staley share a special bond that was forged when the Las Vegas Aces star helped to lead the South Carolina Gamecocks to their first national championship win in 2017.

Last season, the outgoing Staley was courtside at the Barclays Center, New York as Wilson registered 24 points and 16 rebounds in her team's Game Four 70-69 win against the New York Liberty to clinch a second consecutive WNBA title.

During her postgame news conference, A'ja Wilson paid tribute to the Gamecocks coach for her influence on her life, revealing their unique bond.

“She’s watched me win on every level at this point,” Wilson said. “That’s a special moment between us. Everyone knows in this room, Coach Staley is like my second mom. So for her to come out – and she texted me, she was like, ‘I’m coming to this one’ – she didn’t surprise me this time. It was just a true moment and I knew I had to find her."

Wilson revealed the advice from the outgoing Dawn Staley that helped her adapt to the professional level faster.

“She (Staley) has really molded me into the player that I am today. She spent countless hours just telling me what I need to do at the pro level. I thought that relationship was kind of going to disappear as I got to a pro [level] but we’ve still stayed together. … It was just truly a special moment. It was a moment that, that’s gonna be forever, something that I tell my kids about,” Wilson said.

A'ja Wilson has bagged the WNBA MVP twice and WNBA Finals MVP last year alongside winning the WNBA twice making it a clean sweep of honors won through the guidance of her mentor Dawn Staley which has cemented their unique bond.
