South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley reacted in awe to Alabama's dominant first half against Georgia in an NCAA football game at the Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
Coach Kaalen DeBoer of the Crimson Tide saw his team race to a 28-0 lead in the opening first 17 minutes of the matchup between two of the top SEC teams. Staley, who guided South Carolina to a perfect 2023-24 season to win the NCAA women's basketball championship, tweeted:
"TIDE IS ROLLING RIGHT NOW! 🫣🫣🫣," Staley wrote.
Many expected a high-octane showdown between Alabama and Georgia, who were 3-0 before the first kick was made. But the Crimson Tide raced to a 21-0 lead on touchdowns by quarterback Jalen Milroe, running back Jam Miller and wide receiver Germie Bernard.
The lead was as high as 28 points after Milroe had scored on a 36-yard run. Georgia was finally on the board, thanks to a Trevor Etienne seven-yard touchdown run with 6:43 remaining in the second period.
The No. 2-ranked Bulldogs cut the deficit to 15 after Carson Beck tossed a 12-yard TD to Arian Smith and threw a 2-point conversion to Lawson Luckie in the third quarter. Georgia put up three more touchdowns in the fourth frame and grabbed a 34-33 lead after Dillon Bell caught a 67-yard missile from Beck with 2:31 left in the game.
The fourth seed Alabama needed only 13 seconds to reclaim the lead following a Jalen Milroe 75-yard touchdown throw to Ryan Williams and tossed a two-point conversion to Germie Bernard for a 41-34 edge.
Georgia had a chance to force overtime or take the win with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. But Carson Beck threw his third interception to five-star freshman Zabien Brown in the end zone, which eventually cost them the game.
Dawn Staley was named in 'Athletes for Harris' grouping
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley's influence isn't only confined to the four corners of the court but also to the political arena. US presidential candidate and incumbent vice-president Kamala Harris named Staley as one of the 10 sports figures who are part of the "Athletes for Harris" group.
Dawn Staley has been a staunch supporter of Harris and attended the final night of last month's Democratic National Convention where the female politician delivered her acceptance speech. In January, Harris visited Staley's practices with the South Carolina women's basketball team who went on to win the 2024 national title after going 38-0 this past season.
Aside from Dawn Staley, other members of the Athletes for Harris grouping are Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, basketball legends Magic Johnson and Candace Parker, NBA coaches Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers, veteran point guard Chris Paul, soccer’s Ali Krieger, tennis’ Billie Jean King and Paralympic swimmer Ali Truwit, as per Philadelphia Inquirer.
Staley’s Gamecocks visited Harris' office this month and were honored for their achievement.
