South Carolina Gamecocks guard Raven Johnson was part of Under Armour and Kelsey Plum's Dawg Class. The WNBA star worked with the athleisure brand to organize a camp where she trains college athletes and get them a taste of professional-level training.
Johnson was one of the "dawgs" who trained with Plum and other college athletes like KK Arnold, MiLaysia Fulwiley, Aneesah Morrow, Deja Kelly and more. While preparing for one of the sessions, she was asked a series of questions.
When asked how she would describe her playing style, Johnson answered "relentless." When asked who was her favorite hooper, she named Chelsea Gray. Additionally, she named her biggest basketball ick:
"I hate when refs call fouls uout of nowhere."
In the last season, the Gamecocks' most viral foul came when they played against the Kim Mulkey-led LSU Lady Tigers on Jan. 25. Falu'jae Johsnon intentionally fouled the Gamecocks' MiLaysia Fulwiley to prevent a breakaway layup.
That led to Johnson pushing Ashlyn Watkins, subsequently leading Kamilla Cardoso to shove Flau'jae to the ground. Raven Johnson tried to break up the fight, but both benches got emptied, and multiple players were ejected.
Raven Johnson wanted to quit after South Carolina's loss to Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in April 2023
The South Carolina Gamecocks lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Final Four round of the NCAAW tournament in the 2023 season. Johnson was not happy with her performances and watched it over and over. The then-freshman guard wanted to quit basketball.
"I tried … but I always found myself back scrolling and watching the video. The more I saw it, the worse I felt, but I couldn’t help it. It got to a point where I used to sit up and watch that game over and over … more times than I’d like to admit."
"I’ve been challenged in every possible way, and instead of quitting, I let the hard times make good times."
It was not only the loss that broke her and her teammates' spirit but also former star Caitlin Clark waving her off.
"I’ll never forget. ... Everyone was crying. You have to understand, for Aliyah, Brea, Zia, and the rest of our seniors, that was our last time playing together."
Despite being "embarrassed" by Clark's taunting action, Raven Johnson decided not to give in to her emotions for a prolonged period of time and instead leaned on her faith. She said, as per "The Player's Tribune":
"Pastor Greene kept saying everything happens for a reason. “You gotta remember that,” she said.
“This is probably going to be the best thing that ever happened to you. You probably needed a little setback, so you can realize what you need to do to receive what’s coming for you. You know, so you can see what life’s really about. … God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers, so you will bounce back from this. I know it.”"
The offseason proved to be the best time for the Gamecocks, as they could prepare for their revenge tour.
The team set their sight straight on winning the national championship title. Raven Johnson averaged 8.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game and shot 44.3% from the field.
So, now that the revenge tour is open, Raven Johnson and her teammates will prepare for a repeat tour under Dawn Staley.
