MiLaysia Fulwiley took over college basketball last season as a freshman with her incredible performances, leading undefeated South Carolina to a national championship. Her performance caught the attention of Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry, who signed her to his Curry Brand in March.
Having seen Curry in action up close, Fulwiley shared how the veteran guard helps her with her performances in an interview with The Greenville News on Monday.
"Confidence is key. He has the most confidence when he steps on the floor so that motivated me to be more confident myself," Fulwiley said.
Steph Curry also spoke about the South Carolina sophomore, naming the similarities between the two.
"Very similar to how I play, there’s a flair for the dramatic, a creativity that she always finds a way to express," Curry said. "She has a killer instinct."
"Her athleticism, her style and creativity just jumped off the screen," Curry added. "She had that flashy kind of vibe."
Steph Curry comments on MiLaysia Fulwiley coming off the bench
As a freshman, MiLaysia Fulwiley started in just three of the 38 games she played. 12 games into the 2024-25 season, the guard is yet to break into the starting five. While it may be shocking for some to see a player of Fulwiley's caliber be assigned a bench role, Steph Curry disagrees with the popular notion that this affects her game.
“That’s her story, that’s the cool part,” he said. “Everyone has a different journey and she has such a unique perspective in the game … very similar to like a Devin Booker story, a player that was apart of championship caliber team in college but a six man role like MiLaysia is … I think the sky's the limit for her."
MiLaysia Fulwiley struggled with inconsistency this season and this may be why she is yet to see a bigger role within the South Carolina team. Playing 17.8 minutes per game, Fulwiley is averaging 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals.
After the 2024 national championship run, Fulwiley and the Gamecocks have immense pressure to repeat the victory run. They are No. 2 after UCLA, with an 11-1 record. With the holiday break coming to an end, Fulwiley and her team will return to action against Wofford on Sunday.
