Even when Paige Bueckers decided to extend her college career last summer, she was projected to enter the draft as the top pick. The Dallas Wings hold the right to open the 2025 WNBA draft night in April. However, the potential pairing has sparked considerable discussions among analysts, fans and the basketball community.
It is speculated that the UConn Huskies guard will pull off an Eli Manning. The quarterback refused to play for the San Diego Chargers after the franchise picked him in the 2004 NFL draft.
With that, women's basketball content creator Rosalina Lee explored the possibility of eliminating the draft cycle in her latest YouTube video.
Fans rushed to the comment section to react to the narrative:
"No. They should not get rid of the draft. The draft,in all pro sports,is designed to make everyone more competitive. The teams with the worst records pick earlier, than the ones, with the best records.Otherwise,w/o it.The teams, with the most money, would dominate," a fan wrote.
"Let's not. The draft is awesome," another fan commented.
"No draft means owners will drop out of the WNBA," another fan wrote.
More fans joined in on the debate:
"The NBA will not allow this to happen they would pull their m9ney," a fan commented.
"The draft is a part of the CBA.There is no way,the owners, are going to approve a new CBA,agreement w/o it.If the players don't like it.They can start their own league.Such as Unrivaled. We will see how long that lasts.IMO,it is doomed to fail.Just a matter of time," another fan wrote.
"In one word: ABSOLUTELY‼️‼️," another fan commented.
Paige Bueckers can withdraw her draft plans and return to college for one more year
Even before the 2024-25 college basketball season began, Paige Bueckers was assumed to enter the 2025 WNBA draft. However, the UConn guard can extend her college career for one more year as she missed the 2022-23 season due to an ACL.
The star's biggest motivation to return to college was to lift the NCAA title and shed the stain of losing in two Final Four games. Currently, the Huskies (15-2, 6-0 in Big East) remain on pace to mount a promising NCAA run. However, in case UConn falls short, it could motivate Bueckers to exercise her last year of eligibility.
