Even though Paige Bueckers continues to be the UConn Huskies' leader, Robin Lundberg believes Sarah Strong is the next superstar in the making. The broadcaster highlighted Strong's recent two-game run against Holy Cross and Louisville Cardinals, where the freshman filled offensive gaps during Bueckers' scoring struggles.
Robin Lundberg labeled Sarah Strong as the complete package, calling her the Huskies' "best player" across the last two games. Even though he acknowledged Strong's consistency this season will define her overall potential, he predicted Strong to end up as the best player in the county eventually
"Sarah Strong looks every bit the five-star number one recruit she came into UConn as because the freshman looks like a star already, so much so that she has been the team's best player over the last two games," Lundberg said. "It's not crazy to wonder whether Strong could be UConn's best player overall
"...Strong can do it all at her size - she can shoot the ball, she can put it on the floor, she just has natural abilities and talent that stand out. She is going to be a star for UConn for a long time and not just one of the best players, if not the best player on their team but one of the best players, if not the best player in the country very soon."
Sarah Strong posted her career-best college performances in the last two contests, notching up 43 points and 15 rebounds on nearly 78% shooting. On the other hand, Paige Bueckers scored 19 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists on less than 32% shooting in the two games.
Geno Auriemma expects Sarah Strong's offense to slow down deeper into the season
Geno Auriemma compared Sarah Strong’s early freshman season to her former player Breanna Stewart’s early days on Wednesday. However, the winningest coach in Division I claimed that despite Strong’s rare talent, a learning curve could potentially disrupt her offensive flow later in the season
"I remember Stewie (Breanna Stewart) had a November and kind of mid-December blowout where she was just the best player in the country," Auriemma said. (26:40) "There's usually a learning curve and I'm sure that there will be some things that will pop up in the next month."
After her first eight college games, Strong averages 16.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks, leading UConn in boards, rejections and steals. No. 2 UConn plays No. 10 Notre Dame next for the Shamrock Classic on Thursday.
