Flau’jae Johnson reflects on controversial rap song years after backlash

Flau’jae Johnson, on Tuesday, reflected on a moment of controversy surrounding her music during a time when she welcomed teammate Hailey Van Lith to the Tigers. Van Lith, now with the TCU Horned Frogs, played a single season with LSU after transferring from Louisville.

During her transfer in 2023, Johnson released a song titled Put It On Da Floor, a cover of Latto’s hit featuring Cardi B. One particular lyric in the song caused an uproar: “In this 911, blowing smoke just like them towers.” The line, which compared a Porsche 911 to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, sparked widespread backlash.

In a possible referenc to the incident, Johnson shared a Snapchat story on Tuesday. While she didn’t directly mention the song, she could have been referring to "Put It On Da Floor", her only track to face such criticism.

“Randomly just thought about when they tried to cancel me for that one bar,” Johnson said.

When the controversy erupted, Johnson acted quickly. She deleted the song from Twitter, removed it from distribution, and issued an apology on Instagram. LSU also released a statement acknowledging the situation and confirmed discussions with Johnson. The young star emphasized that the lyric was never meant to offend and reiterated her commitment to spreading positivity through her music.

“By no means would I ever intentionally try to disrespect or offend anyone,” Johnson said. “My whole goal in music is to push positivity and spread love. I’m definitely going to learn from this moving forward, and I just thank y’all for your continued support.”
