South Carolina sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley has impressed fans with her performance this season. The Gamecocks star has averaged 10 points and 2.5 rebounds in 17.8 minutes per game and has caught the eye of NBA superstar Stephen Curry.
Curry sees a lot of himself in the way Fulwiley plays and offers advice to help take her game to the next level. The Golden State Warriors point guard spoke with The Greenville News about why he believes the 5-foot-10 guard is a special talent.
"Her athleticism, her style and creativity just jumped off the screen,” Curry said. "She had that flashy kind of vibe ... She knows she’s good but there’s humility too, There’s things you can’t teach with her, her ball handling, speed, athleticism, the way she sees the game, she's fearless.
"That’s her story, that’s the cool part. Everyone has a different journey and she has such a unique perspective in the game … very similar to like a Devin Booker story, a player that was apart of championship caliber team in college but a six man role like MiLaysia is … I think the sky's the limit for her."
MiLaysia Fulwiley grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and committed to the Gamecocks as a five-star prospect in 2023. While in high school, she played AAU basketball with Team Curry — where she first developed a relationship with Steph.
Earlier this year, Fulwiley signed an NIL deal with Curry Brand, becoming the first college basketball player to do so.
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley happy with MiLaysia Fulwiley's growth
Although MiLaysia Fulwiley has not yet cracked the starting lineup for the No. 2 Gamecocks, coach Dawn Staley is pleased with her development.
"We recruited her flash, we knew that was what she was bringing to the table," Staley said. "When the flash isn’t working, you have to have something to fall back on. She knew there’s more, she just didn’t know what that looked like, she (came) to a place that understands what her superpower is."
MiLaysia Fulwiley has played 12 games for the Gamecocks this campaign, scoring in double-figures five times, coming off the bench.
Last season she appeared in all 38 games but started just three as a freshman. This season, she is yet to make the starting lineup, but Staley believes she is taking the right steps. Her impact, even standing as a sixth woman on the team, has been crucial.
