The latest weekly update of the AP Top 25 poll caused a stir among men's college basketball fans. In the Dec. 30 update, the top 10 remained the same as last week, meaning the Tennessee Volunteers topped the list for the second week.
An issue that some fans had was the Alabama Crimson Tide keeping hold of fifth place, which became a topic of debate on social media. Fans took to X/Twitter to express their opinions, believing Nate Oats' side should be ranked lower than No. 5:
"Still have the Crimson Frauds Top 5 lol," said one fan.
"Bama is way too high," said another.
Another fan added, "How the living hell is Alabama STILL above Florida. Let alone we should be top 4."
The Crimson Tide are currently 11-2 this season and 3-1 against ranked opponents. While they have scored impressive wins over Baylor, Houston and North Carolina, they lost their first ranked matchup of the season against Purdue on Nov. 15 and suffered an upset loss to Oregon two weeks later.
SEC dominance in AP Top 25 praised by men's college basketball fans
Other fans were keen to point out the dominance of the Southeastern Conference in the latest update of the AP Top 25. No less than 10 out of the Top 25 compete in the SEC, indicating programs in the conference are likely to produce some of the most entertaining games in the next two months of regular season action.
"SEC dominating this year," said one fan.
Another fan asked, "Wow 10 SEC teams. Is that a record for one conference?"
"10 of the top 25 are from the SEC. 1 of the top 25 are from the ACC," one fan wrote.
The Volunteers are unbeaten in non-conference play this season and have scored impressive victories over former No. 13 Baylor, Miami and Illinois.
Meanwhile, the Kentucky Wildcats have arguably been one of the biggest movers in the AP Top 25 over the season. They were ranked No. 23 in the first week and reached as high as No. 4 in the fifth week. Mark Pope's side currently ranks No. 10 in the weekly poll.
The biggest gainers in the latest update of the AP Top 25 were the UCLA Bruins, who moved from No. 22 to No. 15 following their narrow 65-62 win over Gonzaga on Dec. 28. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were the biggest losers as they slipped from No. 14 to No. 19.
