Dan Hurley and UConn nearly lost their seven-game win streak against the Providence Friars on Sunday. Despite establishing a small lead in the first five minutes of the contest, the Huskies stumbled to a 12-point deficit at halftime (39-27). It is a no-brainer that Hurley utilized the learnings from the first half for his halftime speech to bring his roster together.
After the game was in the books, Hurley took a snapshot of his scowling pose from the live telecast and posted it on his Instagram. The instance occurred moments before the break, indicating the range of emotions the coach might be feeling due to the Huskies' deficit.
UConn fans stormed the comment section to hype the coach, appreciating his humor, choice of sweater and more. Dan Hurley's wife, Andrea, also joined in, hilariously urging him to take down the post.
"Take this down. It’s giving me the sweats," Andrea Hurley commented.
The Huskies redeemed themselves in the second half, outscoring Providence 60-45 to clinch a close 87-84 win. Hassan Diarra led with 19 points and eight assists as three other starters also scored in double digits. Aidan Mahaney and Tarris Reed Jr. also combined for 25 points from the bench.
Dan Hurley commended Hassan Diarra after the win against Providence
After the Huskies improved to a 12-3 record on the season, Dan Hurley labeled senior guard Hassan Diarra as the difference maker. He said that Diarra's leadership was instrumental in UConn's bounce-back and that the guard helped the program avoid an embarrassing situation.
"The game for us was obviously about Hassan Diarra and his will to not allow us to lose what would have been a really rough game," Hurley said (0:35). "Would've been a quad loss at home and just would've been a real tough one for us.
"Quad loss" refers to the NCAA's quadrant system to evaluate the quality of a team's win or loss, depending on the venue, competition and certain performance metrics.
Had the Huskies lost to the Friars, it would have been a Quadrant 3 loss (home game vs teams ranked from 76 to 160).
UConn returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Villanova for the tip-off against the Wildcats.
