The Texas Longhorns assistant coach and director of player development, Sydney Carter has become a household name due to women's college basketball's growing popularity.

She occupies a unique niche not often seen among the coaching staff as she has become one of the fashion icons of college sports due to her often stylish outfits.

Carter has therefore accumulated a huge following on various social media platforms. Most recently, she shared a clip of herself on Instagram celebrating the Juneteenth holiday.

It was captioned:

"Celebrating Freedom."

The Juneteenth federal holiday commemorates the day when the edict about the Emancipation Proclamation arrived in Galveston, Texas (June 19, 1865). It became an official holiday when the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed by President Joe Biden in 2021.

Sydney Carter has a passion for guiding young women

Sydney Carter starred for the Texas A&M Aggies, winning the NCAA national championship in 2011 before being drafted into the WNBA. She had a long career both at home and abroad before returning to indulge in her passion as a coach.

During an interview with 'Black Enterprise', Carter revealed how her personality has tied in with her passion for growing the women's game and mentoring student-athletes.

“For me to be back here after I’ve played at a completely different school in Texas, a rival school in Texas, and then had a pro career, it’s always been a passion of mine to help young women. So, I feel like I’ve always been a leader. Like I’ve always been a talker,” Carter said.
“I kind of just flowed into a role that will allow me to showcase my leadership skills for young women on and off the court.”

Being a style icon has not been the easiest gig for Sydney Carter. She has received a lot of criticism over the years due to her daring fashion choices at games.

She first came to both national and international attention with her daring pink pants during a breast cancer awareness game against the Kentucky Wildcats in the 2021-22 season.

“I think it was a negative aspect to it because that’s what was put out there: ‘How dare she? Why does she think this is appropriate,'” Carter said. “Now, I just think a lot of people see the confidence that I wear and then they see the clothes because I just show up as me and I’m not apologizing for whatever.”

With her following on various social media platforms growing, Sydney Carter is fulfilling her wish to become a mentor for female student-athletes.
