Dawn Staley's Gamecocks earned a dominant 93-47 win over Wofford on Sunday, but in the postgame conference, she pointed out an area where her team continues to struggle.

Staley said her team is offensively talented, both in the paint and beyond the 3-point line. However, she acknowledged that the biggest challenge for South Carolina this season has been maintaining offensive consistency.

She believes that the key to achieving everything else needed on the court lies in discipline. While speaking to the media, Staley discussed how the inconsistency has impacted the defending champions

"I like for us to take good shots, so when we don't take good shots, more than likely they're not going in," Dawn Staley said (1:34). "When we take too many bad shots, it leads to stagnant offense, it leads to us just not having balance and transition. I want a balance, I want to be able to shoot the 3 because we're very capable of doing that."
"And I want us to dominate the paint because we're very capable of doing that and I think we're very capable of doing everything in between, it's just us being disciplined. To being very just calculating from an offensive standpoint, that's that's what gets us in trouble and we got to find a way to fix that."

Even when the Gamecocks almost doubled the opposition's production, the roster struggled with inconsistent offense. They started by shooting 9-for-23 in the first quarter (with most misses coming in the last 2:30) and transitioned to shooting 11-for-19 before the break. The same pattern emerged in the second half.

Dawn Staley outlines expectations before SEC play

After the 78-62 win against USF earlier this month, Dawn Staley claimed her team fell victim to showmanship. She said the younger players strayed from the main objective in order to put fans on their feet throughout the contest.

However, as the Gamecocks head into SEC regular-season play, the championship coach wants to alter the team’s approach.

"We got to play to our standard. We got to play to who we are and we can't play according to how our opponents are playing us," she said. (2:50).

The SEC is considered the toughest conference by experts. For South Carolina, the league games begin when they face Missouri on Thursday.
