Duke freshman Kon Knueppel found his groove as he led the Blue Devils to an 82-56 blowout over Georgia Tech in ACC men's basketball on Saturday. Knueppel had 18 points, five assists and four rebounds along with a steal and a block.
After the game, a video was posted on Instagram showing the guard in a chat with former Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim, who gave him some shooting advice.
"If you get a shot, shoot it ... don't ever think about it because you're gonna make them," Boeheim told Knueppel.
Some fans were unhappy with Boeheim's advice, with some suggesting he should have given it to his former Syracuse team.
"That's not honesty or a gpd advice. Make the right play," a fan wrote.
"New syracuse basketball 🏀 coach need help 😂," another fan wrote.
"Can he please give some feedback to his former program," another commented.
Kon Knueppel rediscovers groove as Duke dismantles Georgia Tech
While not being projected as high as Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel caught the eye of hoops experts and fans at Wisconsin Lutheran High School, where he averaged 26.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game in his senior year.
However, the freshman guard has been largely underwhelming for the Blue Devils, knocking down only seven out of 30 attempts from 3-point range in his previous six Duke outings. The former five-star recruit had not tallied more than 12 points in a game since his first three outings over a month ago.
But the Blue Devils' game against the Yellow Jackets was where the 19-year-old truly shined, scoring a game-high 18 points from 7-for-11 shooting, including an impressive 4-for-8 clip from downtown, in 32 minutes. Knueppel added four rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block without committing a single turnover.
“It was probably the worst slump of my life,” Knueppel said, according to the Sporting News. “So, it was a rough couple of games, but you try to find ways to affect the game in other ways. I just felt like I was making a couple shots here and there, but you can't worry about them.”
The Blue Devils (10-2, 2-0 ACC) will return from a well-earned 10-day rest to host Virginia Tech on Dec. 31.
