The Iowa Hawkeyes' 71-52 win over Virginia Tech on Sunday showcased young talents like Lucy Olsen and Jada Gyamfi. However, there was also an appreciation for the ones who came before them as Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin were present in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The same feeling radiated when Sydney Affolter was asked about her favorite WNBA players in a pregame interview.
The guard named the Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark and the Las Vegas Aces' Kate Martin. With that, Gyamfi, who was eavesdropping Affolter's answer, hilariously claimed that the guard stole her answer. Iowa's photographer/creator Bri Lewerke posted the funny instance on her Instagram story.
"My favorite WNBA players are Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin," Affolter said.
"That's what I was gonna say," Gyamfi replied.
Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall sat courtside. Martin, who is coming off her first WNBA season and conference finals, donned Iowa gear. Moreover, Marshall wore a T-shirt that had the words, 'Jada: Hype Girl' written on it.
Iowa ended the first quarter with a 26-16 lead as Lucy Olsen scored seven points in a 33-second span. However, Virginia Tech cut it to four at halftime, sparking a 14-8 run. Nevertheless, they stormed 22-10 and never looked back, sealing a 71-52 win.
Jada Gyamfi and her friendship with Iowa veterans have a fan following of their own
Thorough her first two years at Iowa, Jada Gyamfi cultivated a close bond with veterans Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall. Now, even after their transition to the next chapters in their journey, the group remains in touch with each other.
The four players have also cultivated a unique fanbase behind their friendship. One signifying factor is the viewership on Jada Gyamfi’s "Fresh Tawk" podcast.
So far, Gyamfi has released 14 podcast episodes, with Hannah Stuelke, Lucy Olsen, Kylie Feuerbach and other college basketball names. However, most of her views came from her episode with Kate Martin (over 127k) and with Martin, Caitlin Clark and Gabbie Marshall (over 139k in six days).
