Dawn Staley praises and reassures Chloe Kitts despite setback
The South Carolina Gamecocks, led by coach Dawn Staley, faced a brief setback when Chloe Kitts missed the November 10 game against NC State due to an "academic policy issue." However, Kitts returned one game later, silencing any doubts with her stellar performance.
Kitts has been a standout for the No. 3-ranked Gamecocks this season. Her resilience and growth were on full display during South Carolina’s 81-70 victory over the No. 8-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Dec. 5, where she scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Following the game, Staley reflected on Kitts' journey and dedication.
“Chloe wants it bad, you know,” Staley said. “Sometimes it works for her, and sometimes against her.”
She recalled a moment where Kitts expressed concern that her coach didn’t believe in her after her minutes decreased over Thanksgiving due to some poor shot choices.
“She didn’t take bad shots,” Staley noted. “And because of that, she gets this kind of performance. When she gets bad shots, it affects our rhythm. My expectation is for her to take better shots, so she can set the example.”
Staley expressed her hope that basketball would “repay” Kitts for her hard work.
“She does all the extra, so I want basketball to repay her in this way a lot more times than it has,” Staley said.
Kitts’ ability to rebound from challenges and excel exemplifies the dedication and skill expected of a Gamecock.
