Hanna and Haley Cavinder power Miami to win vs SMU
Miami women's basketball team bounced back from an eight-game losing streak to beat SMU 70-63. This was partly thanks to impressive efforts from Hanna and Haley Cavinder on Sunday afternoon.
As usual, Haley was exceptional for the Hurricanes, producing a season-high 32 points, and knocked down 10-of-16 shots from the field, including 6-of-9 shots from behind the arc. She also produced two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Hanna was also impressive in the game, recording eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds.
Miami made a strong start to the game and took a 10-3 lead in just over four minutes of the game. SMU responded with a quick 7-2 run, cutting the deficit to just two points late in the first quarter.
The Canes opened the second quarter with back-to-back buckets to take a 20-12 lead. Again, the Mustangs battled back and tied the game at 27 points apiece with 1:48 remaining. However, the Canes asserted their advantage 5-1 over the remaining minutes before halftime.
SMU dominated the early minutes of the second half, going on an 8-2 run, and taking a 36-34 lead over Miami. But Miami responded with an 11-2 run to build a seven-point lead with 4:30 left in the period. Then, the Canes extended their lead to 54-45 before entering the final quarter.
Miami controlled the final quarter with eight straight points early in the game and took their lead up to 18 points. However, SMU attempted another comeback with an 11-0 run to get within three points of the Canes in the final minutes of the game.
However, Haley knocked down three of her four free throws to hand the Canes their first victory of the year.
The Hurricanes (12-8, 2-7) will now focus on their next home game against Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 30.
