Duke won its first exhibition game of the season, but Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer is far from happy. Led by Cooper Flagg, they took on Lincoln on Saturday and won 107-56. He finished with 22 points.
Despite the landslide win, Scheyer shared with the media that there are still things that require fine-tuning.
"You're saying they did well though here," Scheyer said (timestamp 2:26). "For me, on Monday, there's a lot that we have to do better. It wasn't about just getting a win, you know. Our thing is about doing our best whatever that means and so for us, we're going get back to it on Monday and address all the areas we have to get better."
"I know for our guys they're happy, they're excited playing Cameron, but I think they also could feel how much we have to work on. They're not they're not satisfied in the least bit."
Jon Scheyer names Duke's biggest strength heading into the new season
Despite an Elite Eight run last season, Scheyer lost most of his players, except two, to the transfer portal. After rebuilding entirely with six transfers and six freshman recruits, he is now confident about his new team.
During an appearance on "The Brotherhood" podcast on Thursday, Scheyer was asked about the strength of his roster.
“Our unselfishness as a team,” Scheyer said. “I think that’s something you either have organically or you don’t. Feel we have a group that has it. To me, that’s our biggest strength. Forget the skillset or the offense. You guys, man, I think there’s a connection there.”
“The fact that you have, on offense, multiple playmakers,” Scheyer added. “Multiple guys that can pass, shoot, and dribble, but then on defense, we have a team that can guard a lot of different positions.”
Heading into the new season, the Blue Devils are ranked at No. 7 on the AP Top 25 Men’s College Basketball Poll.
While Duke may have the No. 1 recruit and other important pieces, teams like Kansas and Alabama also made major moves in the offseason to stack their rosters with top talents. They are set to pose heavy competition to Duke in the run to the NCAA championship.
