“They are so gross”: College hoops fans react to Northwestern’s Brooks Barnhizer & Nick Martinelli hailed as best NCAAB duo

Northwestern stars Brooks Barnhizer and Nick Martinelli are creating a buzz in college basketball circles being dubbed the best duo this season. They are the only teammates in the NCAA to each average at least 20 points.

Martinelli, a junior forward from Glenview, Illinois, is averaging a team-high 20.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Barnhizer, a senior guard, is putting up 20.1 ppg and 9.4 rpg.

Their impressive play has captivated college hoops fans, with many taking to Instagram to discuss the pair.

"They really are underrated. They got great footwork and dominate smaller guards," one fan wrote.

Brooks Barnhizer records six consecutive double-doubles for Northwestern

Brooks Barnhizer has been in an incredible run of form for Northwestern, recording six straight double-doubles. The 6-foot-6 guard's streak began on Nov. 29 against UNLV when he had 23 points and 10 rebounds.

He followed that up with 21 points and 10 boards in a defeat to Iowa, 17 and 10 versus No. 22 Illinois, 20 and 10 against Georgia Tech in the Milwaukee Tipoff, 21 and 12 versus DePaul, and most recently 22 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Northeastern.

The last Northwestern player to record six consecutive double-doubles was Evan Eschmeyer in 1997.

Barnhizer's stellar play has helped the Wildcats achieve a 10-3 record this season. His 22 points against Northeastern on Sunday were the third-best scoring output, as he shot 7-of-13 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

The Lafayette, Indiana, native averages 20.1 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 4.0 apg, 2.7 spg and 1.1 bpg. He is only behind teammate Nick Martinelli in scoring by 0.1 ppg. Meanwhile, Barnhizer is leading the team in rebounds, assists and steals.
