UCLA coach Mick Cronin's viral rant about his team being soft and delusional was criticized by Field of 68 host and NCAA analyst Rob Dauster on the "After Dark" show on Wednesday. He called out Cronin for seemingly blaming everyone around him and not taking any responsibility.
"He's called out players before," Dauster said (Timestamp: 3:25). "It's worked in the past. Sometimes, it hasn't worked. But to say, 'Look, I'm 53 years old, I got 500 wins, I can't do anything wrong.' ... 'It's all my staff. It's all my players. They keep f***ing up. It's not my fault.' Like, come on! What are we doing here, man?"
UCLA coach Mick Cronin goes off on his team after home loss to Michigan
No. 22 UCLA’s 94-75 loss to No. 24 Michigan on Tuesday night wasn’t just a tough defeat — it left coach Mick Cronin frustrated with his team’s effort, toughness and accountability.
The Bruins fell behind early, briefly rallied, but collapsed in the final 10 minutes. After the game, Cronin didn’t hold back, criticizing both his players and coaching staff for their performance.
"Don’t tell me you want to win," he said. "You start the game, Tyler Bilodeau gave up 12 points. Two screens, he didn’t say a word, 3s, and then he got dunked on three times. So, just don’t tell me you want to win. I mean, we’re soft."
He also expressed frustration with the team’s overall energy and attitude, noting that he often has to push players to show more intensity on the court.
"I have to run on the court to get guys to play hard," Cronin said. "It’s crazy, and it’s every day. I’m tired of it. I’m upset with everybody in that locker room, my assistant coaches and my players."
The Bruins (11-4), now 2-2 in Big Ten play, have struggled with shooting and inconsistent defense throughout the season. Cronin pointed out that some players don’t have a realistic understanding of their abilities.
"It’s really hard to coach people that are delusional," he said. "The hungry dog gets the bone. We’ve got guys that think they’re way better than they are. They’re nice kids. They’re completely delusional about who they are."
The Bruins' next chance to rectify the issues brought up by Cronin comes on Friday at Maryland (11-4, 1-3 Big Ten).
