Paige Bueckers and No. 2 UConn Huskies endured a difficult game on the road, suffering their first loss of the 2024-25 season to No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at South Bend on Thursday. Bueckers, in particular, became the target of the capacity crowd at Purcell Pavilion, facing the heat from fans of the Fighting Irish for a fair part of the game.
In a short clip that has done the rounds on TikTok since the game, chants of 'overrated' rang around the Purcell Pavilion while Bueckers was taking a free throw with 16 seconds to go in the fourth quarter and the scoreline reading 79-67 in the Fighting Irish's favor. A crestfallen Azzi Fudd, who was on the bench at the time, also featured in the clip.
Soon after the clip emerged, college basketball fans took to the social media platform to express their opinions on the treatment Bueckers got from the Notre Dame crowd. Some of them turned on the crowd at Purcell Pavilion, believing they were doing their best to rile up the visitors.
"This is Notre Dame's Super Bowl don’t worry. If fudd was in they would’ve lost for sure," said one fan.
"It was so embarrassing to hear them chant that bs in person," said another.
"You ever been to CBB game? they yell this every single game," another fan added.
Others specifically addressed the crowd calling Bueckers 'overrated,' firmly believing the UConn superstar is anything but.
One fan said, "And the people who are cheering that are people who could not be like Paige Bueckers!"
Another added, "Overrated. GTFOH. Half that crowd can’t even run a suicide.
"Overrated? Didn’t she drop 25 and kept her team in the game. Sometimes fans are annoying," said another.
Paige Bueckers' 25-point effort goes in vain
Despite the crowd at South Bend targeting her, Paige Bueckers proved why she earned a unanimous selection in this year's AP Preseason All-American Team with another solid performance. She finished as the Huskies' top scorer with 25 points, while also recording three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The 79-68 loss to No. 8 Notre Dame takes No. 2 UConn to 8-1, and they will be keen to bounce back in their next game against the Georgetown Hoyas, which will take place at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut on Sunday.
