NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was formally introduced as general manager of the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team on Wednesday. Wojnarowski, known for his scoops on the NBA that the phrase “Woj bomb” was included into the basketball lexicon, was welcomed in his return to his alma mater by various school officials, including Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt and university vice president and director of athletics Bob Beretta.
"I would like you all to know, I retired from ESPN in the news industry. But this is no retirement job for me. I am still driven. I'm still relentless," Wojnarowski said in his speech.
"I know what it is to compete at a high level. And that's why I'm here. That's why we are here ... to compete and to win and do it The Bonaventure Way," he added.
Wojnarowski will help the coaching staff manage several areas, including name, image and likeness opportunities, transfer portal management, alumni-player relationships and program fundraising.
Adrian Wojnarowski teams up with men's basketball coach Mark Schmidt in shaping St. Bonaventure into an NCAA contender
Adrian Wojnarowski will help St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt compete and dominate the Atlantic 10 en route to winning more regular season and tournament championships, qualifying in more NCAA tournaments and assisting more players into the professional basketball scene, especially the NBA.
"The world of college sports is changing dramatically, but our leadership is sending a clear message to everyone – St. Bonaventure is committed to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the best programs in the nation," Wojnarowski said.
Meanwhile, St. Bonaventure vice-president and director of athletics Bob Beretta described Wojnarowski's return to his alma mater and serving as general manager as a bold move, considering the caliber of Wojnarowski as a global face in sports, especially in basketball.
Beretta believes Wojnarowski's reputation would help build the basketball program up with the high school prospects and make them realize that choosing the Bonnies is the best option for them.
St. Bonaventure had a 20-13 record last season, including a 9-9 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Bonnies won their first two games in the conference tournament, including an upset of No. 2 seed Loyola Chicago in the quarterfinals.
Their run was stopped in the semifinals by Duquesne, who went on to win the A-10 Tournament and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
St. Bonaventure should benefit from hiring Wojnarowski, as it could enhance its recruitment and transfer portal harvests in the coming seasons.
