Michigan State coach Tom Izzo shares heartwarming moment with son Steven Izzo
One year ago, Tom Izzo experienced a touching moment on the basketball court, celebrating a special milestone with his son, Steven Izzo.
It was Steven’s first made basket in 43 career games, and the reaction from his Michigan State teammates and the Breslin Center crowd was nothing short of electric. The entire arena erupted in cheers, making it a moment to remember for the Izzo family.
Tom arrived a little late to the postgame press conference that evening but had a heartfelt explanation for the delay.
"I did something I haven't done for a while; I had a chance to celebrate with my kid," Tom said. "I missed out on 22 years (of spending a normal amount of father/son time), so I took an extra moment to do that."
While seeing Steven score was significant for Tom, what truly stood out to him were the reactions from the players and the fans.
"What I was most excited about wasn't (Steven)," he explained. "I was most excited that our players and our fans cared so much about him that they made that more special for me. And it was something I'll never forget."
Tom admitted he felt a bit uneasy during the game, anticipating that Steven might take a shot. However, he acknowledged that his son had earned this moment after five years as a walk-on player. He couldn’t help but praise the execution of his son's play.
"It was actually a hell of a move. He spins, threw it up there," Tom recounted. "A.J. (Hoggard) picked him up, threw him to Tyson (Walker) — I think they thought he was the ball. It was pretty cool."
The celebration that followed showed Steven’s teammates huddling around him, cheering with big smiles, while fans erupted in joy. Check out the special moment below.
It was a spectacular moment that perfectly captured the unity and camaraderie of the Michigan State basketball family. For Tom Izzo, it was more than just a game; it was a memory that he would cherish forever.
