Georgetown's women's basketball program faced intense backlash after a post honoring former player Sydney Wilson sparked controversy. The university's X (formerly Twitter) page shared a message mourning Wilson's "tragic loss." However, this tribute quickly took a dark turn when viewers pointed out the unsettling details behind her death.
“Georgetown women's basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C'13). Forever a Hoya,” the university wrote on X.
However, the community notes on the platform quickly corrected the narrative, detailing the attempted stabbing.
“Sydney Wilson attempted to stab a police officer, who then shot her in self-defense.”
Wilson, a former player for Georgetown's women's basketball team, was shot by a Virginia police officer in mid-September. The incident occurred during a welfare check when she allegedly attacked the responding officer, Peter Liu, with a knife, slashing his face.
The situation escalated quickly, and the officer fired in self-defense. The reaction from the public was swift, with many criticizing the university for how they framed the incident.
A user expressed shock and disappointment.
"What in the holy hell Georgetown? You should be ashamed that she was ever even associated with your school!"
Another one questioned, "Context you morons… Try to kill a cop and you get dead."
A Twitter user commented,
"She tried to murder a cop. You should delete yourself like she did."
"This woman, with no provocation, stabbed a cop and tried to kill him with a knife. I'm not sure you want to claim this one as your own. It makes you and your school look very bad,"nanother X user wrote.
"We should execute the person behind this tweet," read a comment.
A commenter was in dismay:
"Tragic loss? She tried to murder a cop and almost did. Gtfoh."
