Just when Azzi Fudd was getting back to her sharp-shooting ways, the 5-foot-11 suffered another setback. The senior guard led the Huskies with 18 points before contact with Louisville Cardinals' Olivia Cochran sent her on the floor, tending to her right knee.
Fudd cut off a lane for Mackenly Randolph near the baseline, prompting Randolph to detour toward the top of the arc. As Fudd kept on her assignment, a screen from Cochran caught Azzi Fudd off-guard. Fudd soon got up and headed toward the locker room without any assistance.
She returned to the court after a few minutes. However, it is uncertain whether Geno Auriemma will hand her more court time against Louisville.
Fudd is coming off an ACL and meniscus injury she suffered during a team practice at the start of the 2023-24 season. She went up for a jumper and felt something was off in her left knee, prompting surgery and ruling her out for the entire year.
As Fudd sat on the bench, Geno Auriemma approached the senior guard with words of encouragement and a hug.
Fudd's injury and availability for the upcoming games will be known after further medical assessment. However, Geno Auriemma is optimistic about his sharpshooter.
"She was walking around. She was fine and it didn’t looked like worst-case scenario," Auriemma said after the game. "…I hope I’m right, but it’s not that worst-case scenario that we’ve seen so many times before."
