Dan Hurley's UConn men's basketball team lost all three games in the Maui Invitational last week, leading to criticism from basketball analyst Rob Dauster. He appeared on Sunday's "Field of 68 After Dark" show to share his thoughts on UConn's struggles.
When asked about the most disappointing teams to start the season, he viewed the Huskies as his first option.
"UConn is the most disappointing team in college basketball. They got issues at the point. They got issues at the five. They got issues defending. They got issues with their coach [Dan Hurley losing his mind on the sideline]," Dauster said.
"I think some of those issues are really fixable. And I think what happened in Maui is that you had three games in three days. Memphis kind of exposed what those issues were. I think UConn. I think the one critique I would have is that UConn did not schedule anybody before Maui, so they kind of like coast by on the fact that they're more talented than the teams that they were playing.
"Then they got to Maui, and they didn't really have someone punch him in the mouth before they got there. Then they got punched in the mouth, and they didn't have a chance to be able to like practice and fix the issues that they had."
Rob Dauster doesn't see a light schedule for Dan Hurley's UConn
While Rob Dauster does expect Dan Hurley to make adjustments and have No. 2 UConn get back on the right track, he does not anticipate the remaining non-conference schedule to get any easier.
"They're getting thrown right back to the fire, man. You got Baylor at home, at Texas, Gonzaga, and then it's Big East play starts," he said.
After the disappointing losses to Memphis, Colorado and Dayton in the Maui Invitational, the Huskies returned to the win column with a 99-45 home victory over Maryland Eastern-Shore on Saturday. Their record stands at 5-3 and a significant slide down the AP Top 25 poll is expected.
The Huskies average 86.3 points on 50.7% shooting, including 36.5% from beyond the arc on offense while holding opponents to 63.3 points on 39% shooting overall this season. Their losses saw their perimeter defense get exposed, with the aforementioned opponents having made 11.3 triples per game with a 37.8% success rate.
Dan Hurley and No. 2 UConn will face No. 17 Baylor at the Harry Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut, on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
