The AP poll gives the college basketball community a chance to evaluate the current performances of the best teams in the country. This week's edition of the top 25 for the 2024-25 season drew a lot of attention.
In the latest rankings the Associated Press released on Monday, the top five only saw changes with two teams as Duke overtook Iowa State for the second spot. Other noticeable differences were the rises of Purdue to 11th and Wisconsin to 18th while UConn fell to 19th.
It didn't take long for fans to react to the AP Poll, commenting on UConn having a higher ranking than Missouri while noting the lack of movement throughout a portion of the list. Here are some of their reactions.
"lol nobody moved," one fan said regarding the top 10.
"Uconn over Mizzou is laughable," one fan remarked.
"UConn still in the Top 25 😭😭😭," a fan said.
Others believe that Iowa State deserves consideration for the top spot in the AP poll, while pointing out Michigan lost to Minnesota and barely beat Northwestern.
"Iowa state deserves more respect and should be 1," one fan said.
"WHY IS MICHIGAN RANKED???? They lost to Minnesota & barely beat a bad northwestern team," a fan stated.
"Mizzou beat...let me 🤔 Oh yeah, Kansas and Florida. So they get slotted at 22? 15-3 , 4-1 in the SEC. STP," one fan said.
Duke's rise in AP poll is not a coincidence
The rise of the Duke Blue Devils, especially in the top 10 of the AP poll, is justifiable.
No. 2 Duke boasts a 16-2 overall record, including an 8-0 showing in conference play with an ongoing win streak of 12 consecutive games. They hold opponents to shooting splits of 37% from the field and 31% from beyond the arc, winning games by a margin of 21.8 points per game.
Cooper Flagg leads the way with 19.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists on 48.8% shooting overall and 34.8% from downtown. Kon Knueppel comes next with 12.7 points and 3.3 rebounds, while Tyrese Proctor puts up 11 points and 3.4 rebounds.
Having multiple wins over ranked opponents and a lot of momentum with an active win streak, Duke has positioned themselves to be a viable contender for the national championship as they compete with the likes of Auburn and Iowa State, among others.
The No. 2 Blue Devils will prepare for a road matchup with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Jan. 25 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
