Coach Geno Auriemma and his UConn Huskies are set to welcome basketball fans at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in the first week of October. Last week, Storrs Central, the source for all news about UConn, posted a video on Instagram where Auriemma shared the invite with fans.
"Hey, I know it's September but basketball season will be here before you know it," Auriemma said. "No better way to prepare than our inaugural Storrs Central high school, college, pro, anyone - youth coaches, come watch us practice.
"Come listen to our lectures, come watch film with us. Come join us for our Coaches Clinic at Gampel Pavilion, on Oct. 5 and 6. Sign up and we'll see you then."
The program's stars, like Page Bueckers, KK Arnold, Azzi Fudd, Ashlynn Shade and others, are all expected to take part in the practice sessions.
The UConn Huskies' 2023-24 season was heavily affected by consecutive injuries to their upperclassmen. Despite it all, they advanced to the Elite Eight, where they lost to Caitlin Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes. In the offseason, UConn lost two players to the transfer portal and two more to the WNBA.
Talking about the changes and additions the Huskies have made to the roster, Geno Auriemma said in June (via CT Insider):
“You try to think, ‘This is what I think we need. And this is the person that I think fills that need.’ And you just hope you're right. That's it. And I think we get it right more times than we get it wrong.
"These kids that we have this year, I think we got it right, man. Just watching them work out, being around them every day; I think we got it right. I think we got it right last year, and I feel really, really good about where we are right now.”
Geno Auriemma's comments on freshman recruit Sarah Strong
After heavy recruitment battles, the UConn Huskies signed No. 1 recruit Sarah Strong in April, a day after their Elite Eight loss. The forward comes with a lot of expectations, and Geno Auriemma believes that she will tick all the boxes from the first game.
When talking about Strong's recruitment, Auriemma said:
“You need players that are exceptionally confident. You can’t come play here if you think you’re good, right? That’s not gonna work. I think the best players are the ones that go, ‘Coach, I can fill any position you want me to play. Just put me in that spot, put me on the court, and I’ll figure it out. And she’s that kind of kid. I can put her anywhere."
The UConn Huskies will begin their 2024-25 season on Nov. 3 against Fort Hays State.
