UConn freshman Sarah Strong earned the prestigious Big East Freshman of the Week award for the sixth time this season. The announcement came on Monday, as Strong displayed her all-around game last week. The athlete has averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 4.0 steals across two victories.
The Huskies shared the news on Instagram with the caption:
“For the sixth time this season, Sarah Strong is the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week!”
Teammate Ice Brady re-shared the post on her Instagram story and added:
"rah🥵."
Against Xavier, the athlete had scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made five steals. In a win over Georgetown, Strong added 16 points and nine rebounds.
Sarah Strong showed consistency in raising her impact
Strong has managed to score in double digits in every single game so far this season. Through 17 games, she leads UConn in several categories, which include rebounds, blocks, and steals, while ranking second in both scoring and assists. Her well-rounded play has been a key factor in UConn’s rise to No. 6 in the AP Top 25 poll entering Week 11.
This came after Texas suffered a 67-50 loss to No. 2 South Carolina, which led to the Longhorns dropping to No. 7, while LSU’s narrow win over No. 15 Tennessee helped them claim the No. 5 spot.
However, UConn hasn't faced a ranked opponent since their close 72-70 loss to No. 4 USC in December. With their upcoming games against Tennessee and South Carolina, they are set to face at least two more top-25 teams.
In the Huskies’ dominant 85-52 victory over No. 22 Louisville, Strong emerged as the best player on the court. She finished with 21 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 from the 3-point range. She had eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, in 26 minutes.
Her effort was noted by Louisville head coach Jeff Walz, who said:
"She’s an extremely talented player who I’ve got a ton of respect for, but we gave her what she wanted. And you can’t do that to elite players."
Head coach Geno Auriemma has praised Strong for bringing an entirely new dimension to the UConn offense. Auriemma said:
"Sarah brings a dimension that we probably haven’t had in a post player… I don’t know that anyone has had the offensive skill set that Sarah has since [Breanna Stewart] was here."
Sarah Strong will suit up next for the away game against St. John's on Wednesday.
