UConn women's basketball star Kaitlyn Chen shared the UNC women's soccer team's national championship victory on her Instagram story and congratulated Aria Nagai. UNC won a record 23rd national title after defeating Wakefield Forest 1-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park on Monday night.
"You're a star @arianagai," Chen captioned the post.
Like Chen, Nagai transferred from Princeton, joining the North Carolina soccer program last year. She was in action as Olivia Thomas fired the winning goal to hand the Tar Heels their overall 51st NCAA team championship across eight different sports and 62nd overall national championship.
Kaitlyn Chen credits UConn teammates for 'easy transition' from Princeton
Kaitlyn Chen transferred from Princeton University to UConn for her senior year last year. At Princeton, she averaged 15.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists as a junior.
At UConn, Chen, who was brought in as a replacement for Nika Muhl who graduated last year, hit the ground running as she is averaging 7.0 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists in eight games for the Huskies.
The California native credited her quick transition to her teammates. In a chat with CT Insider, following UConn's preseason game against Fort Hayes on Sunday, Nov. 3, Chen said:
"I think my teammates make it really easy for me. They're always there for me, and they help me out when I need help, and vice versa. Today felt great. It was honestly just a lot of fun to be able to go out there and play with my teammates instead of playing with the practice guys every single day."
For Chen's teammates, the point guard was a welcome addition to the team. Sophomore Ashlynn Shade told CT Insider:
"She's an amazing leader. She's really stepped in. Like, she's not shying off just because this is her first year with us. She's really stepping into her role, being a dominant leader for us."
Next, No. 2 UConn faces No. 8 Notre Dame on Thursday, where Chen is expected to continue her red-hot run for the Huskies.
