The UConn Huskies women’s basketball team claimed a 73-55 victory on Sunday, dominating the Georgetown Hoyas on their home court. Azzi Fudd was central to this success, whose performance included scoring 21 points and sinking five three-pointers.
Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed as the official UConn Women’s Basketball Instagram page shared a highlight reel celebrating Fudd’s brilliance in both the Georgetown game and their previous win against Xavier. The video was captioned:
"Oh, you wanted an Azzi Fudd highlight video? with shots from both wins over Xavier and Georgetown? AND the KK hype up? here ya go"
Her fellow player Kamorea Arnold reshared it on her Instagram story with the "queen" emoji:
The Huskies, ranked seventh nationally with a 15-2 record (6-0 in the Big East), fell behind by eight points in the first quarter to Georgetown, a team with an 8-8 record (1-4 in the Big East).
Geno Auriemma reflects on Azzi Fudd’s performance
Fudd grew up near Georgetown’s campus, with family and friends in the stands. She spearheaded the Huskies’ resurgence, leading an offensive push in the second and third quarters that turned the game around.
With remarkable shooting accuracy, Fudd hit 8 of her 13 attempts from the field, including five three-pointers. Her 21-point performance was her second consecutive game scoring over 20 points, following a 9-for-14 shooting display against Xavier earlier in the week.
UConn head coach Geno Auriemma praised Fudd for her effort and determination, acknowledging the personal stakes of the game for her. Auriemma explained:
"Her mom would always buy a ton of tickets for this particular game, and it didn't quite ever work out the way she wanted it to work out. I know she has a lot of fans down here, I know she has a lot of family down here. I could tell early on that she had a little bit of nervousness."
Auriemma also commented on Fudd’s growing confidence and her potential to deliver even more significant performances. He remarked:
"She’s fun to watch. You keep waiting for when is that moment, when — we haven’t seen it this year — when is that moment where three or four or five in a row are going to go in... but little by little, I think she’s getting back to her old self."
With their win over Georgetown secured, the Huskies now set their sights on their next opponent. They are slated to take on Saint John’s in Queens on Wednesday, looking to extend their unbeaten streak in Big East play.
