UConn senior guard Paige Bueckers added another memorable highlight to her recent New York trip after fashion week and Usher concert. She got a chance to connect with another notable figure in basketball, the current South Carolina head coach, Dawn Staley.
Bueckers and Staley were two of the featured athletes in Nike's 'The Look of Victory' gallery exhibition at Broome Street, NY, on Sunday. Nike Women's Instagram account shared a series of photos from the event as several elite athletes from different sports came together to celebrate the brand's latest collection.
"Victory made its mark at Nike’s Look of Victory exhibition in NYC. Everyone from Jordan Chiles to Tyla came together to celebrate sport’s undeniable influence on style," the caption read.
Paige Bueckers, donned in all white, stood next to Staley for a photo shoot along with Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles and Grammy-winning singer Tyla.
The two college basketball greats headed toward Barclays Center for the Liberty-Aces WNBA matchup after the event. A video surfacing on X/Twitter shows them in the house enjoying courtside seats.
However, they did not sit next to each other. Bueckers sat beside gymnast Jordan Chiles in the game.
"Paige Bueckers and Jordan Chiles bringing the courtside DRIP 🤩 Aces-Liberty," WNBA posted on X.
Dawn Staley speaks highly of Paige Bueckers
Paige Bueckers, a 6-foot guard, has faced Dawn Staley's South Carolina multiple times in the conference matches and NCAA tournament.
The three time national champion coach gave a word of advice to Bueckers after the UConn-South Carolina matchup in February.
"Paige was good when she was injured," Staley responded when asked if she noticed a difference in her after recovering from knee injury. "She was good in the national championship game. … I love Paige’s game.
"For me, I would like for her to take more shots if I’m Geno [Auriemma], because she doesn’t take bad shots. She’s got great court vision, she’s got great court awareness."
Staley also mentioned that Bueckers moves with a purpose and she does not make unnecessary play.
The South Carolina coach showed her appreciation to Paige again in March as she appeared on episode three of "Rooted" on YouTube.
"Paige is great. I think Paige is probably the elitist basketball player to ever grace our game," Staley said. "You look at her efficiency — she doesn’t take bad shots."
However, Bueckers does not hold a good record against Staley's team. She has one win out of the four games she has played against South Carolina.
