The USWNT won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics on August 10 after defeating Brazil with a 57th-minute goal from Mallory Swanson. This victory marked the country's fifth gold medal in soccer and its first since 2012.
UConn Huskies star Paige Bueckers was among the prominent personalities who sent their best wishes to the team throughout the tournament. She revealed that she was watching the game even while working out in the gym.
She posted a picture on her Instagram stories showing herself watching the game against Brazil on an iPad even as she worked on the bike in the gym, as she prepares for the basketball preseason.
"Locked in still! Let's go @uswnt," Bueckers wrote on the story.
USWNT recaptures lost glory under Emma Hayes
The USWNT lost in the Round of 16 in the 2023 Women's World Cup, which was their lowest ever finish at the event. Afterward, they dropped to No. 5 in the world rankings, their lowest ever ranking as well and it felt like the end of an era for one of the most successful national teams ever.
They hired Emma Hayes, who was the Chelsea Women's coach and only had two months to prepare for the Olympics before embarking on their redemption tour, which culminated in the narrow gold medal win.
During her postgame news conference, Hayes likened her personality to the USWNT DNA of winning against all odds, crediting the country for helping her grow both as a person and as a coach.
“Winning is in my DNA…and this is part of [their] DNA and that mentality is why I love this country,” Hayes said (per Time Magazine). “That’s why I’m so made for it because of that mentality of never, ever say die and gut it out and grit it out and grind it out; we find things in ourselves that weren’t there before.
“America means more to me than most people realize. I was a 20-year-old who came from a pretty stuffy society that didn’t embrace the women’s game or women in football, and I went to America, and they looked after me, and they nurtured me, and they opened doors for me, and they gave me opportunities that England never, ever gave. And I’m just so happy, so happy to repay that faith in me.”
At the end of it all, the USWNT reigned supreme over familiar opponents Brazil whom they had beaten twice (2004 & 2008) before in the Gold medal match at the Olympics to recapture lost glories.
