USC forward Kiki Iriafen had a succinct reaction to the university's assistant coach Chris Koclanes being named the new coach of the WNBA's Dallas Wings. On Monday, the Wings announced they had hired Koclanes after the franchise parted ways with Latricia Trammell after just two seasons.
Iriafen, a graduate transfer from Stanford, reposted the Wings' announcement post on her Instagram story, adding a 4-word caption.
"Big Time, Well Deserved!!" Kiki wrote, with several emojis including love, partying face, and face holding back tears emojis.
Koclanes joined the USC coaching staff last year and was a part of the Trojans' team that reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 30 years. Before his stint with USC, Koclanes spent six seasons with the Connecticut Sun, including three as an assistant coach.
Along with Kiki Iriafen, USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb also congratulated and bid farewell to Chris Koclanes, writing on Instagram.
"We are thrilled for Chris to be named the new Head Coach of the Dallas Wings. Chris has a unique ability to see the game, break down game and then transfer that knowledge to players in clear and relatable ways," she said.
Kiki Iriafen shares throughs after UConn victory
No. 7 USC jumped to No. 4 in the rankings after defeating the then-No. 4 UConn Huskies, who are down to No. 7. USC senior Kiki Iriafen had a stellar game, leading the Trojans to a 72-70 win at XL Center.
Iriafen finished with a double-double — her fifth in the last six games — with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also added six assists and shot 8 of 19 from the field. After the huge win, the 6-foot-3 forward shared her thoughts on the team's mentality and preparation.
"I think that's the biggest improvement that we've made from the first game is coming together even when things get hard and understanding that we practice every day. We've done the work, so we can trust that work.
"Then, I think there's just like a chip on our shoulder. Losing to UConn in the Elite 8 last year, we didn't want that to happen again. So, I think this game was super big for us, and we all just showed up today."
Kiki Iriafen (18.5 ppg) and teammate JuJu Watkins (24.8 ppg) continue to be major contributors as USC asserts itself as a national title contender. They are 11-1 on the season and have impressive wins over Ole Miss, Oregon and now UConn.
