Sydney Carter believes the glass ceiling is getting broken in women's sports
The former WNBA star believes that women athletes have more growing opportunities and support now than they did before. She especially talked about women college athletes and their relationship with NIL. Carter also discussed the subject in the context of the NCAA's decision in NCAA vs. Alston, which allowed student-athletes to benefit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL).
NIL has given many athletes opportunities to capitalize on their popularity. Women athletes like Livvy Dunne, Flau'jae Johnson, JuJu Watkins, Paige Bueckers, etc. are signed to significant brands.
“So, I think NIL is amazing because for the longest, when I was an athlete, I wanted to feel like, ‘Okay, well, everybody's making money off of us... like, I'm doing the work. I want to get paid.’ So, I think that it's big,” Sydney Carter said, as per Yahoo Sports.
“I wish that there was more structure in it because as a college coach, you see the difficulties that it causes in recruiting and all those other things, but for the athletes, it's amazing. And for us coaches, we just have to learn to adjust and figure it out.”
While acknowledging the benefits of NIL, she wished for such opportunities during her playing career.
Sydney Carter played at Texas A&M University for four years and was a three-time captain. She earned the Big 12 All-Defensive Team honor in 2011 and 2012 and also won the Miss Defense Award in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Carter played for the Chicago Sky after she was drafted in the third round of the 2012 draft. In 2013, she signed a training camp contract but was cut before the season and signed with the Connecticut Sun.
