On November 10, 2023, La La Anthony sat down with Jemele Hill to discuss different chapters of her life, ranging from her acting career to her journey as a mother and co-parent. La La is known for her roles in hit TV shows like BMF and The Chi and her film You People alongside Eddie Murphy.
In the conversation, she talked about how her relationships have evolved with her ex-husband, former NBA star Carmelo Anthony.
She said, “Everyone’s experience is different. For me, it’s kind of like been there, done that. I know what that’s about and it was a great experience while I had it.”
La La stated that she has focused on supporting her son Kiyan Anthony’s journey into basketball. The host also asked La La if she would ever consider remarrying.
She replied, “While, you know, I had it, now we’re in a different phase of life. That’s pretty much what it is for me, but I think everyone has a different journey and different opinions about that.”
Later in the interview, La La also shared her current perspective on life. She explained:
"That’s just kind of where she’s at with it."
She also doesn't want to "get screamed on by any more of my friends who are like, 'You can’t say that, so I’m keeping it. Please!'"
Kiyan's mom stated that she’s in a place where she’s comfortable with where she is.
"I’m gonna keep it around for a little while!”: La La Anthony on keeping her married name for Kiyan’s NBA dreams
One of the more personal topics La La discussed was her decision to keep her married name after her divorce from Carmelo in 2021. During a panel at Fanatics Fest on August 17, she explained why she’s opted to retain the Anthony surname, despite no longer being married.
“The moment of being able to buy Kiyan’s NBA jersey will be crazy,” journalist Taylor Rooks, who was moderating the panel, said.
La La responded with a smile, “That’s why I haven’t changed my last name yet. I’m gonna keep it around for a little while!”
Kiyan Anthony, now a standout high school basketball player, followed in his father’s footsteps. As a shooting guard for Long Island Lutheran High School, he has gained recognition for his exceptional talent and is ranked as the top player in New York by ESPN.
For now, Kiyan has not yet chosen a college. Yet he has already received offers from some of the most prestigious basketball programs in the country, including the University of Southern California, Florida State University, and Ohio State University.
Reflecting on her son’s potential future in the NBA, La La expressed her pride and excitement, noting that buying Kiyan’s NBA jersey would be a special moment for both of them. As Kiyan continues to grow in the basketball world, La La’s support remains unwavering, and she looks forward to the milestones he will achieve in his career.
