UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley showcased his free throw skills on Monday ahead of the Huskies' first-round game in the 2024 Maui Invitational. The No. 2 Huskies are set to face the Memphis Tigers at Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Hawaii.
College basketball writer David Borges posted a video on X, formerly Twitter, showing Hurley participating in a charity free-throw contest in a hotel lobby.
He teamed up with Colton Ching, a seventh-grader from IAO Intermediate. Hurley's first warm-up shot hit the backboard hard before his second attempt went in. Ching's initial shot also bounced off the backboard before finding the net.
Hurley made 2-of-3, while Ching shot a perfect three to win the contest.
Dan Hurley's Huskies face Tigers in Maui Invitational
The UConn Huskies are competing in the 40th Maui Invitational, one of college basketball's premier tournaments. UConn (4-0) takes on Memphis (4-0) in a challenging opener Monday.
The Huskies are coming off an 81-46 win over East Texas A&M last Tuesday at Gampel Pavilion, a performance Hurley described as "comically bad."
“We’re not picking up where we left off last year,” Hurley said (via Hartford Courant). “We’ve got a lot of new faces, a lot of new players, a lot of younger players that I’m gonna have to have some grace and some patience with during the course of the year. ... Last year we started the year very dominant and were able to sustain it, but the group’s got great potential.”
Meanwhile, Memphis had a 68-64 comeback win against the San Francisco Dons last Friday. The last time UConn and Memphis met was on Feb. 16, 2020, when the Huskies beat the Tigers 64-61.
“Just as somebody who played and as somebody who loves the game, just growing up you’ve been watching the Maui Classic," Hurley said. "As a young coach, as a player, hoping one day to compete in it, one day to play in it, one day to coach in it.
“It’s a loaded field, and obviously when you choose to coach or play in a place like UConn, there’s a lot of championship pressure on you to go into tournaments and really go for the hardware.”
The game will tip off at 2:30 p.m. ET.
