Bronny James was drafted into the LA Lakers as the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft on Thursday. The former USC guard could join his father LeBron James in a historic moment as the first active father-son duo on the NBA court.

Bronny did not attend the show in New York in person but had his draft party in LA with his parents, brother Bryce James, and sister Zhuri James. Bryce posted a video on his Instagram of the moment when Bronny's name was called.

Later a friend of Bronny's (@roccovalenti_) posted another angle of the moment. The guard was seen holding back tears as his mother Savannah, also crying, handed him his Lakers cap.

Being drafted into the NBA had been Bronny's biggest dream and his agent revealed earlier this week that the young star simply wanted his name to be called in the draft.

Will Bronny and LeBron play together next season?

Bronny James and his father LeBron playing alongside each other now depend on two things. The Lakers veteran must opt-in to play his final contract year with the Lakers by 5 pm EST on Saturday or prepare for unrestricted free agency. Given his previously mentioned desire to play alongside his son, it is likely that LeBron James will continue with the Lakers.

General Manager Rob Pelinka spoke on the LeBron-Bronny situation in the post-draft interview with the media where he said (via ESPN):

"In the history of the NBA, there's never been a father and a son that have shared an NBA basketball court and that feels like something that could be magical. We know, and have to respect of course, that LeBron has a decision on his opt-out ... but if it worked out that he was on our team next season, NBA history could be made. And NBA history should be made in a Lakers uniform."

Even if LeBron stays in LA, it is unlikely that Bronny will be a part of the rotation. The best-case scenario is that his playing will be restricted to a few garbage minutes. The more likely situation is Bronny spending time in the Summer League, training camp, and preseason games where his performance will be evaluated.

Most pundits agree that Bronny James has the basketball IQ and base skills needed to play well. However, it will take the young guard some time before he can tap into his full potential.
