Shelomi Sanders made the big move to Alabama A&M for her red-shirt junior season and it looks like she is enjoying her time with the Bulldogs. The team visited a zoo in San Diego recently and documented the trip, sharing the video on their Instagram account on Friday.
In Part 2 of the 'Zoo Series,' Alabama A&M coach Dawn Thornton asks Shelomi Sanders and her teammate, Tia Harvey, to name their favorite Thanksgiving meal. Sanders, with an exaggerated passion, replies:
"Cranberry sauce. Oh, my gosh! Cranberry sauce. Give me two cans of cranberry sauce. I will eat the cranberry sauce out the can."
Shelomi Sanders reposted the video on her Instagram story with four smiling emojis.
Shelomi Sanders and the Bulldogs were in the city for the San Diego Thanksgiving Classic on Friday. The Utah Valley Wolverines won 56-54 and Sanders played four minutes, going scoreless.
After not seeing much time in her first two seasons with Jackson State and Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders transferred to Alabama A&M and is currently averaging 1.6 points, 0.2 points and 0.4 assists.
Shelomi Sanders comments on navigating her career while battling diabetes
November is recognised as National Diabetes Awareness Month and Shelomi Sanders spoke to PEOPLE about her journey after she was diagnosed with it at 13. Sanders has type 1 diabetes, where her body does not create enough any insulin to sustain her needs. This means that the guard relies on medication to help match the loss.
“Being that young and getting diagnosed, it was pretty tough just because I didn't expect to take on that much responsibility at a young age," Sanders said. "I was just very insecure. I would hide my devices, I would go to the bathroom to take my injections, all of that."
“But that's definitely changed over the years,” she added. “I was really in denial and very insecure about it for so long. So one day I just made a video explaining my devices and what I've been through and I've gotten so much love since then. I kind of wish I had more of an open mind when I first got diagnosed.”
The guard is open about her struggles on social media and also has an NIL partnership with Dexcom G7, a device that is attached to her body which monitors her glucose levels and feeds information via an app.
