South Carolina’s coach Dawn Staley gave fans a glimpse of her fun and energetic side in a recent video on social media. In a lighthearted moment that has quickly gained attention on Instagram, Dawn Staley, South Carolina’s Raven Johnson, Te-Hina Paopao, and others dropped some cool dance moves.

The video shared on Tuesday showed Staley’s infectious enthusiasm and personality off the court.

Dawn Staley has coached the Gamecocks since 2008, leading South Carolina to six NCAA tournaments and three NCAA women's basketball national championships.

Under the tutelage of Staley, Raven Johnson was named Naismith Prep Player of the Year in 2021 and was listed in the 2023 SEC All-Freshman Team. Te-Hina Paopao joined South Carolina from Oregon in 2023, becoming NCAA champion in 2024, and was named in the 2024 second-team All-SEC.

Dawn Staley is known for building one of the most dominant programs in women's college basketball, the South Carolina Gamecocks powerhouse.

Dawn Staley and the South Carolina squad welcome the upcoming break

Dawn Staley and defending NCAA National Champion South Carolina Gamecocks have had a grueling travel schedule to start their 2024-25 season, and it’s starting to take its toll, said coach Staley. Staley and her Gamecocks have been on the road for much of the season, battling tough opponents across the country.

South Carolina's demanding schedule of 10 games in 34 days, has left the players feeling physically and mentally drained, a challenging stretch of travel, competition and academics.

Staley also acknowledged that her players have remained focused and committed to their goals this season.

“I think our players have really locked in,” Staley said. “I know they have to be exhausted physically, mentally, and welcome the break that’s coming up. But they still want to approach each game and play to our standard.”

After the Gamecocks kicked off their title defense in Las Vegas with a high-profile matchup against Michigan, they traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, Los Angeles, Fort Myers and Fort Worth, Texas, all within 34 days.

With so much movement in such a short time, it’s no surprise that Staley recently admitted that her team is feeling the effects of all the travel.

The Gamecocks have been navigating a demanding travel schedule while balancing academics and the pressures of defending their national title. While the players are feeling the strain, Staley is hopeful that the upcoming break will give them the rest they need to recharge for the remainder of the season.

“I was tired,” Staley said when reflecting on her team’s exhausting start to the season. “I look forward to this break, I look forward to our Christmas break, although I know we’ve got a few more games to play.”

With their championship pedigree and talent, a well-rested Gamecocks will be a force to reckon with against any opponent.
