Dan Hurley is known by many for his expressiveness when reacting to the officiating or plays made by his team or the opponent. The former happened on Tuesday, and he didn't like what took place.
With less than 30 seconds remaining in the game between No. 2 UConn and Colorado, Hurley believed that the referees missed a foul call against the Buffaloes. He was not happy with the decision, as during a timeout called with 20 seconds left, he attempted to walk towards them before an assistant coach pulled him back to prevent him from getting a technical foul.
Colorado (5-1) then went on to get a go-ahead layup with eight seconds left to escape with the 73-72 upset win over the second-ranked Huskies (4-2).
Dan Hurley getting attention from officials recently
It marked the second time in as many days that Dan Hurley drew attention for his behavior towards officials.
In the Huskies' tournament opener against Memphis on Monday, a 99-97 overtime loss, Hurley cursed out an official after an offensive foul was called on UConn's Liam McNeeley with 40.3 seconds left in the overtime period.
That prompted Hurley, not happy with the call, to call the referee a "f***ing joke," drawing a technical foul against Hurley.
"I had a lot of issues with what went on out there in the game," Hurley said. "That over-the-back call at that point of the game, there was no attempt to block out. There was a player on Memphis that made a half-assed effort to rebound that basketball, and Liam McNeeley high-pointed that rebound.
"For that call to be made at that point of the game was a complete joke. But if I made that call at that point, I would have ignored the fact that I was on my back. If I made that call, I would have ignored that. I would have ignored that. That was a major, obviously, a major ... how you could call that while that game was going on, the way that game was going on, is just beyond me."
With two straight losses, Dan Hurley and No. 2 UConn will look to bounce back and end their time in the Maui Invitational with a victory against the loser of the matchup between Iowa State and Dayton on Thursday at midnight ET.
