Jared McCain was picked No. 16 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2024 NBA Draft on Wednesday. After one season with the Duke Blue Devils, McCain impressed scouts and NBA teams with his excellent skills and dedication.
On Saturday, SLAM HIGH SCHOOL posted a throwback interview with Jared McCain where the guard said:
"The ultimate goal is to make it to the NBA. That's been my dream since I was like, in second grade, when I was just eight and I was just praying to make to the NBA watching Kobe, that's my favorite player of all time. My ultimate goal is to make it to the NBA."

Slam followed McCain as he went about practicing and shared a sneak peek into his room. On the moldboard, the Sixers rookie had pinned his goals, one of which included a SLAM cover. Pointing to it, he said:
"Two years ago, I wrote that. Take some time to just really look over at me and my resume and maybe you'll give me a SLAM cover one day. I'll be on it with someone else. Just put me like, somewhere on it. I don't have to be the center stage."
Jared McCain shares his goals for rookie season with Philly
The shift from college basketball to the NBA will be huge for Jared McCain. He shared his goals for his first year as he acquaints himself with the changes.
“For me, in college obviously, I played more of an off-ball role,” McCain said (via Sixerswire). “So I think, obviously, being able to learn from Tyrese on-ball stuff and being able to show that I can be on the ball, make reads on pick-and-rolls, and then show defensively that I’m willing to be that defender.”
“Obviously, learning the team rotations, learning the team I think the mind is something a lot of people will undervalue in this draft just being able to figure out stuff,” he added. “The IQ. I think I’m good at that so I’m gonna try and show that as much as I can my rookie season.”
The Philadelphia 76ers had a great start last season but stumbled due to injuries to Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. With the addition of Jared McCain, the Sixers have strengthened their secondary shooting options who can step in when needed.
