The new college season is just two months away, and coach Kim Mulkey is back to training with her LSU Tigers. After failing to defend their 2023 NCAA championship win, the Tigers are poised to take another shot at it. However, this time, they will be without the help of their star forward, Angel Reese.
On Friday, Overtime shared a video of Mulkey in her element, guiding and teaching her players shooting and defensive skills.
"This team is gonna be special this year. Clock it ✍️ @lsuwbkb," the caption read.
This is Kim Mulkey's fourth year with the Tigers. She lost four players to the transfer portal this offseason, including Kateri Poole, Angelica Velez, Hailey Van Lith and Janae Kent. Mulkey has since added Shayeann Day-Wilson, Kailyn Gilbert and Mjracle Sheppard, along with freshman Jada Richard and Jersey Wolfenbarger, who sat out last season.
Kim Mulkey makes major coaching changes to her staff with the addition of a WNBA legend
Coach Mulkey has also made changes to her coaching staff as she added former Lady Tiger Seimone Augustus as the assistant coach. After 10 years as a player in the WNBA and one year as the assistant coach for the LA Spark, Augustus is back in her hometown guiding the WNBA's next big talents.
In a press release, Kim Mulkey spoke on the importance of Seimone Augustus joining the staff.
“As a player at LSU, Seimone helped transform the program ... She brought LSU to national prominence," coach Mulkey said. "She will be a tremendous member on our staff as someone with great experience who has excelled at every level of the game from high school in Baton Rouge to college to the WNBA to the Olympics.
"Her expertise in the game will benefit our team and allow our players the opportunity to learn from a Hall of Famer who has exhibited great class throughout her entire career."
During her four years with the LSU Tigers, Seimone Augustus led the team to three straight Final Four appearances. She also won the Naismith College Player of the Year, Wooden Award and Wade Trophy twice in 2005 and 2006.
Commenting on her new team, Augustus said:
“They really don't need much work; everything is mostly what we always say the mental is to the physical as four is to one.
"It's just a mindset of how you want to approach the game, how you want to be able to attack, utilize your gifts that you have and then sharpening the tools that need to be sharpened in your bag."
LSU Tigers will play their first preseason charity games on Oct. 20 and 24 against Xavier and Alexandria, respectively. Their first regular season game is scheduled for Nov. 4 against Eastern Kentucky.
