Coach Jake Diebler and the Ohio State men's basketball team mean business. On Tuesday, the Buckeyes shared a sneak peek into their preparations for the 2024-25 season on social media, with Diebler pushing his players to their limits ahead of his first full year as OSU coach.
Diebler was mic'd up in the Buckeyes' latest practice session and put his players through intense drills and a 5v5 game. The first drill saw him sport a blocking pad and a padded blocking guard, challenging his players to make shots after taking contact. Most of them succeeded, with some posting up effectively.
The next drill saw the Buckeyes work on some plays, with Jake Diebler getting his players to work together to improve their chemistry. He appreciated the plays that worked while getting his players to understand the flaws that needed to be worked on.
Diebler then got his Ohio State players to play a five-a-side game. He urged his players to run straight back to defense after making an offensive play and also appreciated those who executed plays seamlessly. To cap off the session, he gave a few words of advice and motivation, focusing on the importance of growth.
"What did we talk about before practice? Growth," Diebler said. "We talked about the ingredients, right? We saw maturity. Couple of times, we hung our head, played into our way. We can't do that. That's not who we are.
"This group has consistently played hard and competed. Now, can we add some details? We only get a certain number of days together before November 4. Tomorrow has to count."
Can Jake Diebler turn the Ohio State Buckeyes around?
Jake Diebler took over as interim head coach of the Buckeyes toward the end of the 2023-24 season when the program fired Chris Holtmann after failing to reach the NCAA Tournament in the last couple of seasons.
The Buckeyes' latest practice session showed the energy Diebler brings to the table, which will be critical to motivating the roster to deliver the best results possible in the upcoming season.
Ohio State has also strengthened its roster with the addition of Croatian 7-footer Ivan Njegovan and four-star point guard John Mobley, ranked the 54th overall prospect in the country.
Jake Diebler and the Buckeyes will begin the 2024-25 season with the Hall of Fame Series, with their first game against the Texas Longhorns on Nov. 4. Before that, they will have an exhibition game against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Oct. 18 at Cincinnati.
