Geno Auriemma talks about Azzi Fudd after victory over Georgetown
The UConn Huskies secured an impressive 73-55 road victory over the Georgetown Hoyas on Jan. 11, powered by a standout performance from Azzi Fudd. The dynamic senior guard, who grew up just a few miles from Georgetown’s campus, shone in front of dozens of family and friends, making the night even more special.
Fudd led the Huskies with 21 points, sinking five three-pointers. With the No. 6-ranked UConn squad continuing its strong season, Fudd’s performance was a highlight in what felt like a homecoming game for the star.
Coach Geno Auriemma shared his thoughts on Azzi Fudd’s performance during the postgame press conference, offering insight into her mindset and growth as a player. Auriemma reflected on Fudd’s past struggles in similar situations but praised her for stepping up this time around.
“Her mom would always buy a ton of tickets for this particular game,” Auriemma said. “It didn’t quite ever work out the way she wanted it to,” referencing Fudd’s previous games in her hometown.
“I know she has a lot of fans down here, I know she has a lot of family down here. I could tell early on that she had a little bit of nervousness."
Despite those initial nerves, Fudd quickly found her rhythm, delivering a performance that thrilled her hometown crowd.
“She’s fun to watch,” Auriemma said. “You keep waiting for when is that moment, when we haven’t seen it this year, when is that moment where three or four or five in a row are going to go in... but little by little, I think she’s getting back to her old self.”
Fudd’s effort against Georgetown is another step forward as she continues to regain the form that made her one of the most promising players in college basketball.
With her skill, determination, and the support of her family and teammates, Fudd is proving to be a critical piece of UConn’s success this season.
