Dawn Staley and South Carolina are in Washington, D.C., celebrating their 2024 NCAA championship win with President Joe Biden. Despite this being her third title win, Tuesday's visit was the first time in the White House for coach Staley.

After the first title win in 2017, there was a delay in the invitation as the president's office only reached out after Staley revealed that they hadn't received the call. By then, the team was deep into practice and could not take a break. The Gamecocks' visit after the 2022 NCAA title win was dropped due to scheduling conflicts.

With her finally in the White House, Dawn Staley used the moment to teach her players the importance of unity and progress.

"I feel like this is a teachable moment for my team," Staley said. "I’m reminded of the journey of our home state, South Carolina, has taken. How not so long ago, the Confederate flag was taken down from our state capitol, a symbol that represented division and exclusion.
"Today, my staff, my team and I stand here embodying diversity, inclusiveness and unity. My hope is that this moment lands on you, my team, as a powerful reminder of the beauty that can come from unifying for a common goal and doing things the right way."

President Biden heaps praise on coach Dawn Staley

President Joe Biden, during his speech, emphasized the importance of women's sports and the impact athletes have on young girls. Later in a post on X, Biden heaped his praises on Staley, highlighting her legacy within the Gamecocks program.

"When Coach Staley took this job, Carolyn Peck gave her a piece of net from her title game and asked Coach to pay it forward," he wrote. "So after her first title, she sent a piece of her own net to every Black woman head coach in Division I women’s basketball. That's one hell of a legacy."

The president also joked about the influence of Staley in South Carolina, saying that those who hold public office will lose their jobs the moment she chooses to run.
