USC Trojans star JuJu Watkins had a different set of eyes on her on Sunday when she threw the first ceremonial pitch at the Dodger Stadium. It was at the Freeway Series, pitting the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Los Angeles Angels.

Although it's the college basketball off-season, Watkins is hard at work in the gym. A clip of the popular Trojans star practicing her handling with both hands, which included mazy dribbles, was posted on 'Swish Culture's Instagram page.

JuJu Watkins was working out with her long-term mentor and former NBA assistant coach Phil Handy in the video.

JuJu Watkins continues to make a case as the face of college basketball

It's a close-run thing for the de facto face of college basketball rights. It is seen as a race involving USC Trojans star JuJu Watkins, whose prodigious rise has seen her become a household name in just one season.

The other prospect in contention is UConn Huskies star Paige Bueckers. She has been renowned since a dominant freshman season where she swept all the major individual awards on offer.

Watkins throwing the ceremonial first pitch during the Freeway Series shows just how far college women's basketball has come. Now, other sports are cashing in on the popularity of female prospects.

While speaking to reporters after throwing the first pitch, she acknowledged the growth of women's sports and showed her willingness to improve further.

“The women in the sport are incredible and just to see the rise of the game, it’s so inspiring,” Watkins said. “It’s definitely a collective effort. I wouldn’t say I hold any sole responsibility. Just make sure I’m doing my part. Now I’m ready to get back to it. There’s so many things to get better at.”

Although she had promised to pitch with her left hand due to a right finger sprain, Watkins still delivered a right-handed strike to Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Gavin Stone.

Even the usually unflappable Watkins showed signs of nerves at the big occasion, admitting the fact to reporters before she threw the pitch.

“This is probably the most nervous I’ve ever been,” Watkins said. “Basketball comes easy, not baseball. I always see it on social media. Never did I think I would be throwing a pitch.”

USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb mentioned that former Iowa Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark offered to help Watkins deal with the wave of attention coming her way. Clark, herself the face of college basketball before her departure for the WNBA, is undoubtedly the best person to seek advise from.
